For Porsche specialist Edwin Lammertink, the character of a classic 911 should be preserved. Any modification should enhance the driving experience without compromising what makes the car special. After installing and testing the electronically adjustable exhaust system from Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde on his own Porsche 911, he shares his experience.
Respecting the original
When you have worked with classic Porsches for many years, you look at modifications differently. Especially with the 911 G-models, preserving the original appearance is essential. That was one of my main concerns with this exhaust. During development, I was quite critical about the position and appearance of the exhaust tip. A large or overly prominent exhaust simply does not belong on a classic 911.
The final result convinced me. The system integrates beautifully underneath the car and stays remarkably close to the original appearance. At first glance, you can hardly tell anything has changed.
More character when you want it
The original exhaust note is unmistakably Porsche, but also quite restrained. With Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde, the car gains another dimension. What I particularly like is having control over the sound. You can drive quietly and comfortably when the situation calls for it, while the other settings bring out much more of the character of the air-cooled engine. Open the system and you really hear what this Porsche has to offer. Yet you never have to drive with a permanently loud exhaust. You choose the sound to match the moment.
Thoughtful integration
The installation also impressed me. The system is complete and the electronics are neatly integrated into the car. There is no need to unnecessarily alter or drill into the dashboard for the controls, which is exactly what you want with a classic Porsche. It feels like a carefully engineered solution rather than simply an aftermarket exhaust.
The verdict
For me, a modification to a classic Porsche needs to achieve two things: respect the original design and add something meaningful to the driving experience. Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde does both. The Porsche retains its authentic appearance, while the adjustable sound gives it significantly more character and emotion when you want it.
